Ponaug Marina

Ponaug Marina sits on the western shore of Apponaug Cove, the protected inner basin of Greenwich Bay. This launch point gives you direct access to one of Rhode Island's most beginner-friendly paddling areas. The cove itself is relatively shallow and narrow, bordered by residential neighborhoods and modest commercial development. From here, you can paddle north into the broader Greenwich Bay or explore the quieter waters closer to the marina. The entire area is well-protected from ocean swells, making it ideal for building paddling skills or taking out visitors who are new to kayaking or SUP.

On the water, expect calm, manageable conditions most of the time. Apponaug Cove has minimal current and rarely develops significant wind chop thanks to surrounding land features. The real factor to plan around is tide. Tidal range here is roughly 4-5 feet, which affects water depth and paddling distance more than difficulty. At low tide, the cove shallows considerably, which is actually helpful for beginners since you can touch bottom if needed. Higher tide gives you more water to explore and makes navigation easier. The bottom is mostly mud and sand, so groundings are soft. Traffic is light to moderate, mostly recreational boats and the occasional fishing charter heading out to the bay.

Ponaug Marina operates year-round, but the paddling season runs strongest from March through November. Winter conditions are cold and the wind can pick up unpredictably. Spring and fall typically offer the steadiest weather and clearest water. The marina is just 0.5 miles from downtown Warwick, making it extremely accessible. You'll find ample parking, restroom facilities, and rental options at the marina itself if you don't have your own boat. There's also a small cafe nearby for pre or post-paddle food. Launch fees are modest and often waived for renters. Because this is a working marina with commercial activity, arrive early on weekends to secure good parking and avoid the midday rush.
