Apponaug Cove

This shallow, sheltered embayment is ideal for kayakers and SUP enthusiasts looking to build skills or enjoy a relaxed paddle without exposure to open water. The cove's proximity to downtown Warwick makes it one of the most accessible launch points in the area, with manageable parking and a straightforward entry onto protected water that rarely gets rough.

Conditions here are consistently mild and forgiving, which is why beginners gravitate toward Apponaug Cove. The water is shallow and calm, protected from Atlantic swells by the broader Greenwich Bay. Tidal currents are present but gentle, running primarily along the main channels rather than creating significant obstacles. Expect moderate currents on ebb tide as water drains from the cove, but nothing that will challenge a competent paddler. Water clarity varies seasonally, and you'll notice the bottom becomes muddier as you move into the deeper portions of the cove. Visibility from the water is reasonable, with low shoreline development and decent sight lines. The cove can get busy on warm weekends with recreational boaters and fishing activity, so early morning paddles tend to be more peaceful.

Launch from the public boat ramp in Apponaug (just off Narragansett Parkway) where you'll find adequate parking and a concrete ramp suitable for both kayak and SUP. The season runs reliably from March through November, with March and April offering cooler but less crowded conditions and September through October delivering ideal water temperatures and stable weather. Summer months bring crowds and occasional afternoon thermal winds, though nothing severe. Winter paddling is possible but requires proper cold water gear. No amenities exist directly at the launch, so pack what you need. Warwick is less than a mile away with restaurants and services if you want to extend your outing. The cove itself is best explored on a rising or high tide to avoid getting caught in shallow mud flats on the southern side. A two to three hour paddle gives you time to explore the cove's interior and work the edges without overcommitting.
