Pirates Cove

Pirates Cove is a well-protected launch point on Shoestring Bay, offering easy access to one of the more forgiving paddling areas on Cape Cod. The cove itself is shallow and sheltered, making it an ideal staging area for kayakers and SUP paddlers heading out into the bay's deeper waters. The sandy beach launch is straightforward, and the immediate surroundings feature salt marsh and modest residential development. From here, you can paddle into Shoestring Bay proper, which opens up gradually and provides plenty of room to explore without committing to a serious distance. This is the kind of place where beginners can gain confidence while experienced paddlers can knock out a solid workout or leisurely morning on the water.

Expect calm, manageable conditions most of the time, especially in the morning hours before wind builds. Shoestring Bay is tidal, so plan your paddle around the tide cycle to make your life easier. On incoming tide, you'll have fresher water and stronger currents, while outgoing tide can leave some areas shallower and more exposed. Wind is the main variable here, typically picking up from the southwest in the afternoon. The water is generally protected from ocean swells due to the bay's configuration, making it suitable for both kayaks and standup boards. Visibility into the water is decent, and you'll encounter eelgrass beds and occasional sandy shallows. Paddling here feels intimate and manageable, rarely overwhelming even on busier days.

March through November is the practical paddling season, with warmer water from June through September. Launch from Pirates Cove Beach, which is about 1.6 miles from downtown Mashpee. There's a small parking area near the cove, though it fills up quickly on weekends and summer days, so arrive early or consider weekday paddles. Basic amenities exist in nearby Mashpee, including restaurants and a grocery store, but plan to bring water and snacks for your paddle. The cove has no rental facilities directly on site, so come with your own gear or rent from one of the rental shops in the broader Mashpee area. Winter paddling is possible but water temps drop significantly, requiring appropriate gear. Respect private property around the cove and follow local launch guidelines.
