Ockway Bay Landing

Ockway Bay Landing provides straightforward access to a sheltered Massachusetts bay ideal for developing your paddling skills. The launch sits on the western side of Ockway Bay, a protected body of water that spans roughly 3 miles across at its widest point. This is classic New England coastal paddling without the exposure, making it perfect for kayakers and SUP paddlers who want salt water experience in manageable conditions. The bay opens to larger waters beyond, but from the landing itself you can explore miles of protected shoreline, salt marsh edges, and gentle coves without committing to offshore conditions.

Expect calm, predictable paddling most days, especially during slack tide periods. The bay is tidal with swing shifts of 3 to 4 feet depending on the moon phase, so water levels and current intensity will shift throughout the day. Incoming tides generally push water toward the northern end of the bay, while outgoing tides create light southward flow. These aren't powerful currents, but timing your paddle with incoming tide means easier paddling out and faster returns, which matters if you're new to tidal waters. The shoreline consists of salt marsh, residential areas, and some rocky points worth exploring. Water visibility is typical for a Cape Cod bay (reasonable in summer, cloudier in spring and fall), and wildlife viewing is solid with osprey, herons, and occasional seal sightings in cooler months.

Launch from Ockway Bay Landing between March and November for the most comfortable paddling. Water temperatures below 50 degrees warrant a wetsuit, which you'll want March through May and October through November. The landing has a concrete ramp and modest parking (arrive early on weekends), with basic facilities nearby in Mashpee just 2.3 miles away. No rentals operate directly at the landing, so bring your own boat or arrange rentals beforehand from shops in nearby towns.
