Bayou Teche

Bayou Teche is a gentle, sheltered waterway that winds through the heart of Louisiana's Acadian country, offering paddlers an intimate look at cypress swamps, historic plantations, and authentic bayou culture. The main launch point sits just a short distance from Saint Martinville, making this one of the most accessible bayou paddles in the region. The waterway itself is relatively narrow and intimate compared to larger Louisiana bays, with banks lined by towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. This is a working landscape where you'll often see commercial fishing boats, recreational anglers, and occasionally alligators sunning on the banks, so expect to share the water with local traffic.

Paddling conditions on Bayou Teche are ideal for beginners and intermediate paddlers. The water is sheltered from open ocean swell and wind due to the dense vegetation and narrow channel layout, though tidal fluctuations will affect water levels and current. Plan your paddle around slack tide if possible, particularly if you're venturing far upstream where current becomes more noticeable. The water is typically murky with low visibility, which is normal for bayou systems. Expect shallow areas, submerged logs, and occasional grassy sections that can slow your progress. Most paddlers stick to the main channel where it's well-marked and deeper. Kayaks and SUPs both work well here, though kayaks offer better maneuverability in tighter sections.

Bayou Teche is paddleable year-round, though late spring through early fall offers warmest conditions (and highest insect activity). Winter months from November through March provide more comfortable paddling temperatures and fewer mosquitoes. The Saint Martinville area has basic amenities including restaurants, gas stations, and a few local outfitters that rent kayaks and offer guided tours. If you're launching independently, look for public access points near the town. Bring insect repellent regardless of season, a headlamp or light for spotting wildlife, and be prepared for the murky water with a solid roll or reliable exit strategy. Cell service can be spotty in remote sections, so plan your route beforehand and let someone know where you're paddling.
