Upper Chatuge Lloyds Landing

Lake Chatuge is a 22-mile-long reservoir straddling the Georgia-North Carolina border, and Lloyds Landing in the upper lake basin offers one of the most accessible and sheltered launch points on the water. This shallow, cove-rich section of Chatuge stays relatively protected from wind due to surrounding terrain, making it ideal for paddlers who want a low-stress experience. The launch itself is straightforward: a sandy beach with easy water access and ample parking just a short walk from Hiawassee. Unlike the deeper, more exposed lower lake sections, the upper basin around Lloyds Landing features numerous small islands, marshy inlets, and creek mouths that invite exploration without requiring serious flatwater distance or advanced skills.

Conditions here are consistently calm and predictable, which is exactly why beginners and recreational paddlers gravitate toward this location. Motorboat traffic exists but is generally lighter than at more developed southern sections of the lake, and afternoon winds are manageable rather than punishing. The shallow water means you're never far from shore, and visibility into the water column lets you spot submerged deadfall and navigate around it confidently. Expect clear water most days, though tannin staining from creek inlets is normal. Wildlife paddling is solid here, particularly for herons, egrets, and osprey. Anglers find this upper section productive for largemouth bass and catfish, with numerous drop-offs and structure near the creek confluences.

The paddling season runs strong from March through November, with spring and early fall offering the best combination of comfortable weather and low water levels that expose more interesting shoreline. Summer is warm but crowded on weekends. Winter paddling is possible but less rewarding due to shorter daylight and the lake's draw-down for power generation. Lloyds Landing is literally adjacent to Hiawassee, so amenities are convenient: gas stations, basic groceries, and a couple of casual restaurants within a few minutes' drive. The launch has a small picnic area, but no restrooms on-site, so plan accordingly. There's no boat rental at the landing itself, so bring your own paddle craft. Water levels drop gradually through summer and fall, which affects launch ease in late October and November, so launch early in the day if visiting then. This location works best as a half-day paddle: 2 to 4 hours of exploration typically satisfies without requiring a full day commitment.
