Morning launches typically offer the calmest conditions, as afternoon sea breezes from the east can pick up and create some chop by mid-afternoon. The north-south orientation of this part of the bay means you can usually find a sheltered side depending on wind direction. Water depths vary from very shallow near the mangroves to 6-8 feet in the main channels, giving you options based on your comfort level and what you want to see.

Kayakers will appreciate the ability to get into the narrower mangrove tunnels and explore the more protected backwater areas. Winter months (December through March) offer the most comfortable air temperatures and fewer afternoon thunderstorms, plus better manatee viewing as they congregate in warmer shallow waters. Summer brings more heat and humidity, along with daily afternoon thunderstorm potential, so early morning starts become essential. Hurricane season (June through November) requires keeping an eye on weather patterns, but between storms, you'll often find excellent conditions. Spring and fall provide the best balance of comfortable temperatures and stable weather patterns.

The launch at Bill Bird Marina is straightforward, with a concrete boat ramp that works well for all paddle craft. Parking is available but can fill up on busy weekends, so arriving early is smart, especially during peak season. The facility is easy to find just off Haulover Inlet, and the ramp has decent water depth even at lower tides. From North Miami Beach, it's a quick drive east to the marina. Be aware that this is a working marina with motorboat traffic, so stay alert when launching and landing. The ramp fee is reasonable, and there are restrooms available. If you're planning a longer paddle, consider the tidal timing for your return, as launching on an incoming tide makes for easier paddling both out and back.
