Tidal flows are the primary water movement you'll encounter, with currents that are predictable and manageable for beginners. The best paddling typically occurs during the two hours before and after high tide when water levels provide access to more of the slough's channels and wildlife viewing areas. Wind conditions are notably calmer here than in the open bay, though afternoon northwest winds can still pick up during summer months. Morning launches often provide the glassiest conditions and most active wildlife.

Kayaking is the most popular activity here, with both sit-on-top recreational kayaks and touring kayaks working well in these protected waters. The area is particularly well-suited for wildlife photography and nature observation, so having a stable platform is more important than speed. SUP enthusiasts will find excellent conditions, especially in the early morning when winds are light. The relatively shallow waters in parts of the slough make SUP quite forgiving for beginners. While sea kayaking skills aren't essential for the slough itself, having some experience with tidal paddling and basic navigation is helpful since the channel system can be confusing for first-time visitors.

Winter months often provide the calmest conditions and clearest water, plus this is prime time for harbor seal pupping and increased bird activity. Spring brings migrating gray whales that can sometimes be spotted from the outer areas accessible from the launch. Summer offers the warmest weather but can be windier in the afternoons, making early morning launches preferable. Fall frequently delivers the best combination of calm winds, good visibility, and active wildlife as many species prepare for winter. The mild coastal climate means you can paddle comfortably in a wetsuit year-round, though winter paddlers should be prepared for cooler air temperatures.

Woodward Marine is located right off Highway 1 in Moss Landing, making it easily accessible from both the San Francisco Bay Area and the Monterey Peninsula. The facility offers a proper boat ramp with adjacent parking, though spaces can fill up on busy weekends. Launch fees may apply, so check current rates before heading out. The ramp provides easy water access at most tide levels, though extremely low tides can make launching more challenging. Restrooms and basic amenities are available, and several local outfitters operate from this area if you need gear or guided tours. The nearby Moss Landing Harbor adds some commercial boat traffic, but it's generally light and manageable for recreational paddlers.
