Clipper Yacht Harbor sits at the northern edge of Richardson Bay, offering paddlers direct access to one of the Bay Area's most protected and scenic waterways. Tucked between Sausalito and Belvedere, this launch point puts you on calm, sheltered water with views of the Marin Headlands and San Francisco Bay beyond. The harbor itself is working waterfront, home to sailboats and small craft, but the paddling area opens into a wide bay with plenty of room to explore. This is genuinely beginner-friendly water, making it ideal for newer paddlers, families, or anyone wanting a mellow day on the bay without dealing with ocean swells or strong currents.

Expect glassy, protected conditions most days, especially in the morning hours before wind builds. Richardson Bay is tidal, so you'll notice water level changes and gentle current flow, but nothing dramatic or challenging. The bay bottom is mostly mud and sand, keeping water temperature relatively moderate compared to ocean paddling. Visibility is good on clear days, and you'll share the water with local sailboats and motorboats, so stay aware of traffic patterns, especially on weekends. Paddling east takes you deeper into the bay toward San Rafael; paddling south brings you closer to the Golden Gate and stronger currents, but most paddlers stick to the bay proper. The shoreline is residential and undeveloped in places, giving you a quieter experience despite proximity to Sausalito.

Clipper Yacht Harbor works year-round, though you'll find the most comfortable conditions from April through October. Winter paddling is possible but expect shorter daylight hours and occasional heavy rain. Parking is available at the harbor, though spaces fill up quickly on sunny weekends, so arrive early. The launch is straightforward for both kayaks and SUPs, with easy beach access. Sausalito's downtown (less than a mile away) has restaurants and shops if you want to combine paddling with other activities. There are no dedicated paddling amenities at the harbor itself, so bring what you need. Afternoon winds can pick up by late spring and summer, so morning paddles are your best bet for guaranteed calm water.
