Roberts Bayou is a shallow, protected estuary tucked between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores that offers ideal conditions for paddlers of all skill levels. Josephine Park provides the main public access point, with a convenient boat ramp and parking area that make launching straightforward. The bayou itself is a maze of mangrove shorelines, salt marsh, and open water channels that stay relatively contained and protected from Gulf swells. This is genuine coastal paddling without the exposure, making it perfect for building sea kayaking skills or simply enjoying a mellow day on the water.

Conditions here are predictable and forgiving most of the time. The water rarely gets rough, though you'll definitely notice the tidal influence, which typically runs 1 to 2 feet and can create noticeable current in the narrower channels. Depth averages 4 to 8 feet in the main areas, with shallower zones near the mangrove edges. Visibility is typical for bayou water (tea-colored), so don't expect to see the bottom. Wind is your main variable, and afternoon sea breezes can pick up, but they rarely create serious chop given the protected nature of the water. Early morning is often calm and glassy. Expect to see plenty of wading birds, mullet, and seasonal fish activity. Navigation is straightforward for the most part, though the mangrove channels can look similar, so paying attention helps.

The paddling season runs strong from March through November, with water temperatures dropping below comfortable levels in winter months. March through May and September through November offer the best combination of mild weather and calm conditions. Summer is hot and humid, but the water stays protected. Access is easy from Orange Beach, just 2.8 miles away. Josephine Park has adequate parking, a solid concrete ramp, and basic facilities. There's no rental shop at the park itself, but several outfitters operate nearby in Orange Beach if you need to rent gear. Launch early if you're concerned about tides, as the shallow areas can get tighter at low water. Bring sun protection and water, and check the weather before heading out since afternoon winds can develop.
