The Shenandoah River Valley is one of Virginia's most popular paddling destinations, with the Blue Ridge Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. This section from Front Royal south to Bentonville follows the South Fork through classic Shenandoah Valley farmland and forest.
The river is wide and gentle with occasional Class I riffles over limestone ledges. Smallmouth bass fishing is excellent — the Shenandoah is considered one of the best smallmouth fisheries east of the Mississippi. Great blue herons and bald eagles are common.
The valley is steeped in Civil War history, and several historical sites are visible from the river. The paddling season runs March through November, with summer being the most popular for tubing and swimming.
