The route follows the eastern shore south from Spencer Spit, rounds the tip past Iceberg Point, and returns along the western shore. Orca whales frequent the waters between Lopez and San Juan Islands from May through September. Harbor seals haul out on rocky islets, and bald eagles nest in the shoreline Douglas firs.

The San Juan Islands enjoy a rain shadow effect, receiving significantly less rainfall than Seattle. Summer days are long and often clear, with water temperatures reaching the mid-50s. A drysuit or wetsuit is recommended for cold water safety.
