About This Route
You'll paddle upstream on Florida's only federally designated Wild and Scenic River through a progression of ecosystems: mangrove estuary, cypress swamp, and pine flatwoods. The Loxahatchee narrows dramatically as you head upstream, with overhanging branches creating a tunnel effect in the upper section.
This is one of the best places in southeast Florida to spot wildlife. River otters, alligators, ospreys, and manatees all use this corridor. Your turnaround point is the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site, a preserved 1930s-era wilderness homestead accessible only by boat.
Time your paddle with the tide. An incoming tide makes the upstream leg easier, and you'll ride the outgoing tide back to the park. Ranger-guided tours of the Trapper Nelson site run seasonally (November through April).
