About This Route
The Buffalo River was America's first National River, designated in 1972 to protect it from dam construction. This upper section features the most dramatic scenery — 500-foot limestone bluffs, the iconic Roark Bluff, and crystal-clear water flowing over gravel bars.
The Buffalo is entirely free-flowing with no dams, making it one of the last wild rivers in the lower 48. Water levels depend entirely on rainfall, so this paddle is seasonal — best in spring and after significant rain events.
Elk have been reintroduced to the Buffalo River valley, and you may spot them grazing in riverside meadows. The cliffs are dotted with caves and overhangs that sheltered Native Americans for thousands of years.
