Sister Bay Marina

Sister Bay Marina sits at the northern tip of Door County, offering direct access to the calm, protected waters of Green Bay. This is a genuine working marina, so you'll share the launch area with fishing boats and commercial traffic, but the setup is straightforward for paddlers. The marina itself is small and well-maintained, with easy water access and reliable facilities. From here, you're paddling into some of the most beginner-friendly waters in Wisconsin. Green Bay itself is massive (over 2,000 square miles), but the Sister Bay area keeps you in shallow, sheltered conditions away from the open water's chop and currents.

Once you're on the water, expect calm, predictable conditions for most of the season. The bay floor is sandy and shallow near the marina, typically 15-25 feet deep within a quarter mile of shore. Water clarity varies seasonally, but summer is best. Tidal influence is subtle here compared to ocean paddling, but it does exist, so plan accordingly if you're going out for several hours. Summer winds tend to come from the south and west, which actually blow you into the bay rather than out toward open water, making this even safer for beginners. The shoreline alternates between sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and tree-lined banks. You can paddle north toward Horseshoe Island or south along the residential waterfront without ever feeling exposed.

Plan your visit between June and August for the most reliable conditions and warmest water temperatures (around 70 degrees by midsummer). The marina is literally 0.4 miles from downtown Sister Bay, so parking, food, and lodging are steps away. Sister Bay is a legitimate tourist destination with restaurants and shops, which makes this a good option if you're combining paddling with other activities. The marina has a small launch fee (typically under $10) and usually offers restroom facilities. Bring your own boat or rent locally. Water shoes are smart because the rocky bottom in places can be sharp, and the shallow water means you might need to wade in or out. If you're new to paddling, the enclosed feel of this bay makes it an excellent training ground before tackling Green Bay's more exposed sections or Lake Michigan itself.
