Weaver Cove

Weaver Cove sits along the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, offering paddlers a protected pocket of water that's ideal for building skills or enjoying a relaxed afternoon on the water. The cove itself is shallow and well-sheltered from bay swells, making it a natural choice for beginners and families. The launch point provides straightforward access to calm conditions, with nearby marsh areas and gentle shoreline to explore. From here, you can venture into the broader bay if conditions allow, but the cove's enclosed nature means you're never far from protection. The water is generally clear enough to see bottom in shallow areas, and the surrounding landscape includes residential properties mixed with natural shoreline.

Paddling conditions at Weaver Cove are predictable and manageable for most skill levels. Tidal currents flow through the cove, but they're typically mild compared to other parts of the bay. Your main consideration will be tidal height, which affects water depth and launch ease. Morning and afternoon paddling usually offers calm wind conditions, though afternoon sea breezes can build by late day. The shallow bottom means chop doesn't develop into serious waves, even with wind. Water temperature varies seasonally, so plan accordingly with a wetsuit or drysuit during colder months. Expect to share the water with recreational boaters, particularly on weekends, but traffic remains reasonable.

Weaver Cove is best paddled from March through November, when conditions warm up and water levels support comfortable paddling. Winter paddling is possible but requires proper cold water gear. Located just 2 miles from Middletown, the cove is easily accessible without a long drive from Providence or Newport. A boat ramp and parking area provide convenient launching, though spaces fill quickly on nice weekends. No significant amenities exist directly at the launch, so bring water and snacks with you. Restrooms and food options are available in downtown Middletown, a short drive away. This is an excellent location for developing paddling fundamentals or introducing newcomers to kayaking and SUP in a forgiving, scenic setting.
