About This Location
Protected Narragansett Bay West paddling near Jamestown, Rhode Island. Beginner-friendly kayaking and SUP year-round.
Fort Getty sits on the western shore of Narragansett Bay, offering easy access to some of the most beginner-friendly paddling in Rhode Island. This protected corner of the bay is ideal for kayakers and SUP paddlers who want the experience of open water without the exposure of heading into the Atlantic. The launch point benefits from the surrounding geography, with Conanicut Island blocking the worst of the bay's swells while still providing plenty of water to explore. You'll paddle through working waterfront scenery, past moored boats and shallow coves, with views toward the Newport Bridge and neighboring islands.
Water conditions here are consistently manageable for paddlers of all skill levels. The bay runs tidal but the currents are moderate, and the sheltered nature of this western bay means wind chop rarely builds into anything serious. You'll encounter the most stable conditions during slack tide (the period between tide changes), though paddling against the current is entirely doable if you're prepared. Expect shallow, murky water that's typical of protected bay systems. Visibility underwater is limited, so watch your draft in some of the coves. The bottom is mostly sand and mud. Wildlife is abundant, particularly in spring and fall migration periods when you might see osprey, cormorants, and various waterfowl.
Fort Getty Regional Park is your access point, located just 1.9 miles from central Jamestown. The park charges a modest day-use fee and provides a concrete boat ramp suitable for kayaks and SUP boards, plus parking and restroom facilities. The paddling season runs strong from March through November, with calm spring days and warmer summer waters making May through September the most popular window. March and April can surprise you with decent conditions but chilly water temperatures, so wear appropriate gear. Launch early or plan around the tide if you're new to tidal paddling. There's no food service at the park itself, so pack snacks and water. Plan for two to three hours of paddling to fully explore the immediate area around the point, though you can easily spend a full day here if you venture toward Gould Island or the northern reaches of the bay.
New to paddling? This is a great beginner spot.
Calm bay waters make Fort Getty ideal for first-timers. Make sure you have the right gear:
