About This Location
Lake Wallula behind McNary Dam offers calm, beginner-friendly paddling on the Columbia River with excellent boat ramp access near Umatilla.
Lake Wallula behind McNary Dam offers some of the most reliable paddling conditions on the Columbia River, with over 60 miles of sheltered water stretching from the dam upstream to the Tri-Cities. This impounded section eliminates the Columbia's notorious current and wind issues that plague other reaches, creating an enormous playground perfect for beginners and anyone seeking a relaxing day on the water. The lake maintains consistent water levels year-round thanks to dam operations, and the surrounding high desert landscape provides a striking backdrop quite different from the typical Pacific Northwest scenery. Multiple arms and bays offer endless exploration opportunities, while the main channel gives you that big water feeling without the associated challenges.
Paddling conditions here are about as forgiving as you'll find on the Columbia system. The impoundment effectively eliminates current except near tributary mouths, and the lake's orientation and surrounding topography provide natural wind protection, especially in the lower sections near the dam. Mornings typically offer glass-calm conditions, with afternoon thermals creating moderate chop that's rarely problematic for any craft. The water stays relatively warm through summer and early fall, making accidental swims less concerning than on free-flowing sections upstream. Launch early if you want mirror-smooth water, but even midday conditions rarely exceed moderate chop that most paddlers handle easily.
This location works exceptionally well for all paddle craft types. Kayakers appreciate the long fetch available for touring and the numerous coves perfect for practicing skills or escaping wind. Canoeists will find the calm conditions ideal for family trips and camping excursions to the various beaches and islands scattered throughout the lake. SUP enthusiasts have discovered this spot in recent years, drawn by the consistent flat water and scenic desert canyon walls. For kayak fishing, the lake holds walleye, bass, and salmon depending on season, with productive structure along rocky shorelines and submerged islands. The McNary area specifically offers good fishing near the dam face where current concentrates baitfish.
Spring brings the most dramatic scenery as desert wildflowers bloom along the shorelines, though water temperatures remain quite cold into May. Summer provides the most consistent conditions with warm water and predictable weather patterns, though afternoon winds can build by mid-July through August. Fall offers my personal favorite paddling season here, with comfortable air temperatures, warm water lingering from summer, and significantly reduced boat traffic after Labor Day. Winter paddling is possible during mild spells, but launch facilities may have limited access, and the combination of cold water and air temperatures requires proper cold water gear and experience.
The McNary Dam boat launch provides excellent access with a concrete ramp, floating dock, and ample parking for dozens of vehicles with trailers. Located just off Highway 730 about a mile east of the dam itself, the launch stays usable even during low water periods that affect other Columbia River access points. Restrooms and a small picnic area make this convenient for longer outings. The ramp does get busy with powerboaters on summer weekends, so plan accordingly if you prefer quieter launches. From Umatilla, head east on Highway 730, and you'll see the signed access road on your right. No fees or permits required, and the facilities are maintained year-round by the Army Corps of Engineers.
