Lex's Landing

Lex's Landing offers direct access to Rogue River Bay, a protected estuary where beginner paddlers can safely explore tidal waters and coastal scenery. Located just south of Gold Beach in Wedderburn, this launch point sits on the eastern shore of the bay where the Rogue River meets the ocean. The bay itself is a scenic blend of rocky outcrops, sandy beaches, and forested shorelines typical of Oregon's southern coast. Water clarity varies with tidal cycles and recent rainfall, but visibility is generally good for spotting marine life and navigating the bay's relatively simple geography. The landing provides straightforward access without requiring technical portages or complex shuttle arrangements, making it ideal for paddlers who want to maximize water time over logistics.

Conditions at Lex's Landing are consistently beginner-friendly due to the bay's natural shelter from ocean swells. Tidal influence is the primary factor shaping paddling here, with currents strongest during tidal transitions. Plan your paddle around slack tide if you're new to tidal waters, or use the incoming tide to explore deeper into the estuary. Wind is generally manageable in the protected bay, though afternoon breezes can pick up, especially during spring months. The shallow, sandy bottom throughout much of the bay means you're rarely far from shore, and the moderate water temperature (50-60 degrees depending on season) warrants appropriate layers or wetsuits. Sea kayaks, kayaks, and SUPs all work well here, though SUP paddlers should be aware that tidal flats can expose rocky patches during low water.

The paddling season runs comfortably from March through November, with summer months offering the warmest conditions and longest daylight hours. March and April bring freshwater flows and the most dynamic tidal exchanges, while fall months offer calmer conditions and fewer summer crowds. Lex's Landing is located in Wedderburn, just 0.2 miles from the main access point, making it an easy find off US-101. The nearby town of Gold Beach (2 miles south) offers full services including restaurants, lodging, and supply shops. The landing itself has basic parking and a clear beach launch area suitable for sandy beach techniques. No formal facilities exist at the landing, so arrive with everything you need. High tide provides the deepest water and easiest launch conditions, particularly important for SUP paddlers unfamiliar with tidal launches.
