Paddling conditions here are consistently mellow, with minimal current and protection from prevailing winds thanks to the surrounding terrain. The channel typically flows north toward the Columbia, but the current is gentle enough that most paddlers barely notice it. Morning paddles offer the calmest water and best wildlife viewing opportunities, while afternoons can bring light breezes that create small ripples but rarely anything challenging. Water levels stay fairly consistent year-round since the channel connects to the Columbia River system, though spring runoff can increase the flow slightly and bring more debris.

Brown's Landing Court is located off Highway 30 about three miles southeast of Scappoose, making it easily accessible from Portland or points north. The concrete boat ramp is well-maintained and suitable for launching any type of paddle craft, with a decent amount of parking in the gravel lot. The ramp can get busy on summer weekends with power boaters, so early morning launches are your best bet for avoiding crowds and claiming parking spots. There are no restrooms or other facilities here, so plan accordingly. The launch faces south down the channel, putting you immediately into paddling-friendly water without having to navigate through any boat traffic areas or challenging conditions to reach the good stuff.
