The launch sits just a mile from Kaw City and provides a sheltered entry point into this 17-mile-long impoundment on the Arkansas River. From here, you can paddle into protected coves and shallow bays that stay relatively flat even when wind picks up elsewhere on the lake. The creek mouth itself is narrow and scenic, lined with cottonwoods and native vegetation that funnel you into the main lake basin. This is genuinely beginner-friendly water, not the "easy until it isn't" kind of lake you find elsewhere.

Once on the water, expect glassy conditions most mornings and afternoons, especially during the calmer months. Kaw Lake's fetch is limited compared to larger Oklahoma reservoirs, so even afternoon winds rarely build troublesome chop here. Paddling distances are flexible, depending on your skill level and time. You can stay within a half-mile of the launch in the creek and shallow bays, or venture farther into the main lake if you're comfortable. Kayak anglers find decent numbers of bass, catfish, and crappie in the shallows, particularly around the submerged timber near the launch. Visibility into the water varies seasonally, but it's generally adequate for spotting hazards and structure. The lake bottom transitions from silt to rocky areas, so grounding out is unlikely if you stick to established routes.

Paddle Coon Creek between March and November for the most dependable conditions, though October through April offers the most comfortable air temperatures for sustained paddling. Summers can be hot, so plan early morning launches. Getting here is straightforward: Kaw City sits right off US-77, and Coon Creek launch has a small parking area with a concrete boat ramp suitable for kayaks and canoes. The facilities are basic but functional, with restrooms at the nearby boat ramp area. This location works equally well for casual half-day trips and longer explorations. Bring sun protection regardless of season, and carry more water than you think you'll need, as amenities on the water itself are minimal. No special permits are required for paddling here, making this an accessible option for Oklahoma paddlers of any experience level.
