Buckeye Lake State Park - Lieb's Island

Buckeye Lake offers some of the most reliable beginner-friendly paddling in central Ohio, and the Lieb's Island area provides excellent access to this 3,100-acre glacial lake. Located just off I-70 between Columbus and Newark, this historic lake has been a paddling destination since the 1800s when it served as part of the Ohio and Erie Canal system. The relatively shallow waters, numerous coves, and protected areas around the islands make it ideal for newcomers to the sport, while the lake's size provides enough variety to keep experienced paddlers interested. Lieb's Island itself sits on the lake's north side and offers paddlers a chance to explore its shoreline and the quiet channels that wind between the marshy areas.

On the water, you'll find Buckeye Lake generally calm and forgiving, though it can get choppy when winds pick up from the southwest. The lake averages about 5 feet deep with some areas reaching 10 feet, so you won't encounter strong currents or dramatic depth changes. Morning paddling typically offers the best conditions with glassy water, while afternoons can bring boat traffic and wind chop, especially on weekends. The area around Lieb's Island tends to stay calmer than the main lake body due to natural wind protection. Water levels remain fairly consistent throughout the season, though late summer can see some drawdown during dry years.

Kayakers will find this an excellent training ground for building skills before tackling more challenging waters. The launch at Lieb's Island works well for both sit-on-top and touring kayaks, with easy beach access for launching. Canoeists should stick to early morning or evening paddles when boat traffic is lighter, as the wake from larger boats can make things bouncy midday. SUP paddlers have been discovering this spot in recent years, particularly enjoying the protected coves and channels where they can paddle without dealing with boat wake. For kayak fishing, the shallow flats around the island and the weed lines hold decent populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. The north shore structure and fallen timber provide good fishing spots within easy paddling distance of the launch.

Spring paddling here starts as early as March once ice clears, with water temperatures cold but air temps comfortable for paddling in proper gear. Summer brings warm water perfect for swimming breaks, though also the heaviest boat traffic and weekend crowds. Fall offers some of the best paddling conditions with comfortable temperatures, minimal boat traffic after Labor Day, and decent fishing as fish move into shallower water. The surrounding hardwood forests provide nice fall color viewing from the water. Winter paddling is possible during mild spells, but ice fishing becomes the primary winter activity once the lake freezes.

The Lieb's Island boat ramp sits right off Lieb's Island Road, about half a mile north of Millersport. Parking is adequate for a dozen vehicles with trailers, though it can fill up on busy summer weekends when power boaters claim most spots early. The concrete ramp is in good condition and suitable for hand launching kayaks and canoes, though you'll share it with motorboat traffic. No launch fees are required. The facility includes basic restrooms and a small picnic area, but no other amenities, so bring water and snacks. From Columbus, take I-70 east to the Millersport exit, then follow signs north to the lake. The ramp is well-marked and easy to find.
