Poe's Ridge Boat Ramp

Jordan Lake stands out as one of North Carolina's premier paddling destinations, offering over 14,000 acres of calm water surrounded by protected forestland in the heart of the Triangle region. This Army Corps of Engineers reservoir was created in the 1980s primarily for flood control and water supply, but it has become a paddling paradise with numerous coves, creeks, and protected areas perfect for exploring. Poe's Ridge provides access to some of the lake's most scenic and sheltered sections, where you can paddle among submerged timber and along wooded shorelines without dealing with the crowds that hit the more popular northern access points. The water clarity here is typically good, and the diverse habitat supports excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including great blue herons, ospreys, and occasional bald eagles.

The paddling conditions at Poe's Ridge are ideal for beginners and anyone seeking a relaxing day on the water. The launch puts you in a protected cove that stays relatively calm even when the main lake has whitecaps from afternoon winds. Morning paddles offer the smoothest conditions, with glassy water that provides perfect reflections of the surrounding pine and hardwood forest. By mid-afternoon, especially during summer, thermal winds can pick up and create 1-2 foot waves on the main lake, but the numerous coves and creek arms off this section provide plenty of shelter. The depth varies considerably, with shallow areas near creek mouths and deeper water in the main channels, so watch for submerged stumps and logs, especially during lower water periods in late summer and fall.

Kayakers will find this spot particularly rewarding for exploration, as the intricate shoreline offers endless nooks and crannies to investigate. Canoeists should stick to the protected areas during windy conditions, as Jordan Lake can get choppy quickly when the wind picks up. SUP paddlers do well here in the morning hours or in the back coves where wind protection is best. For kayak fishing, this area is outstanding for largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. The submerged timber and drop-offs near creek channels hold fish year-round, and the shallow coves warm up early in spring, making them productive for spawning bass. Live bait works well for catfish in the deeper areas, while artificial lures are effective along the timber lines and rocky points.

Spring brings the best overall conditions, with comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and active fish as the water warms. Summer can get busy on weekends, but weekday paddles are still peaceful, and early morning or evening sessions avoid both the crowds and the afternoon winds. Fall is arguably the most beautiful time to paddle here, with spectacular foliage reflecting in the water and comfortable temperatures for longer trips. The lake level tends to be lowest in late fall and early winter, which can make some of the creek arms too shallow for comfortable paddling but also exposes more of the underwater structure that attracts fish.

Getting to Poe's Ridge requires a short drive down Poe's Ridge Road off Highway 1, about a mile south of Moncure. The concrete boat ramp is in good condition and can handle everything from kayaks to larger motorboats, though it does get busy with bass boat traffic on weekend mornings during fishing season. Parking is adequate but not huge, so arriving early is wise during peak times. There are no facilities here beyond the ramp and parking area, so bring everything you need including water and snacks. The ramp has a reasonable grade and a good surface, making it easy to launch and retrieve boats. Be aware that this is a fee area managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, so you'll need to pay the day-use fee or have an annual pass.
