Paved Boat Ramp - Figure Eight Island

Middle Sound sits as a protected bay system between Figure Eight Island and the mainland, making it one of the most accessible and beginner-friendly paddling destinations in the Wilmington area. The paved boat ramp at Figure Eight Island provides easy access to roughly 2,000 acres of relatively shallow, calm water that's perfect for learning paddling fundamentals. This launch point puts you immediately into quiet waters with minimal boat traffic compared to nearby Wrightsville Beach, which means you can focus on technique and exploration rather than dodging recreational boaters.

Once on the water, expect mostly sheltered conditions with the natural protection that comes from being surrounded by barrier islands and marsh systems. The bay averages 4 to 6 feet deep, though depths vary with tide, and the bottom is mostly sandy with occasional seagrass beds. Tidal currents are manageable for beginners, typically moving 0.3 to 0.5 knots during peak flow. Paddlers should plan their route with tidal movement in mind, as incoming tide makes exploration easier in certain directions while outgoing tide works better for others. Wildlife viewing is solid here; expect to see herons, egrets, osprey, and occasionally dolphins cruising the deeper channels. Wind is usually the biggest variable, with the bay becoming choppy during nor'easters or strong afternoon sea breezes, so earlier morning paddles tend to offer the calmest conditions.

The ramp itself is well-maintained asphalt with plenty of parking and a gentle slope that works well for both kayaks and SUP boards. March through November offers the most comfortable water temperatures and weather patterns, though the bay is technically paddleable year-round if you're prepared for cold water. From Wrightsville Beach, head west and follow signs toward Figure Eight Island; the ramp is clearly marked and accessible to the public. The facility has no rental shops directly on site, so you'll need to bring your own paddle craft or rent from outfitters in Wrightsville Beach (about 5 miles away). There are no concessions at the ramp itself, so pack water and snacks if you're planning an extended paddle.
