The bay itself is a shallow, protected estuary separated from the Atlantic by barrier islands, making it ideal for paddlers who want open water without serious ocean exposure. From here, you can paddle north into the main body of Barnegat Bay or south toward the numerous creeks and coves that branch off the Intracoastal. The water is generally clear enough to see the sandy bottom in 3 to 6 feet of depth, and you'll encounter a mix of marsh, spartina grass, and open bay throughout your paddling. This is workaday New Jersey coastline, not scenic postcard material, but it's reliable and productive for anyone looking to get on the water without hassle.

Expect calm, sheltered conditions on most days, which is why this spot works so well for beginners and recreational paddlers. The bay is shallow enough that wind rarely builds serious chop, though spring nor'easters can kick up some texture. Tidal range here is about 4 feet, and the tide moves steadily through the channels, so plan your route accordingly. If you're paddling south into the narrower creeks, you'll work with the tide and encounter minimal current. The bay is home to blue crabs, flounder, and seasonal baitfish, which means you'll see wildlife year-round: herons, egrets, cormorants, and osprey are common sights. The bottom is mostly soft mud and sand, so grounding is forgiving if you misjudge depth in the shallower sections.

The paddling season runs strong from March through November, with July and August being warm but occasionally crowded. Winter paddling is possible on calm days, but the water temperature drops into the 40s Fahrenheit, so a wetsuit becomes necessary. Baltic Marina is located just half a mile from downtown Waretown, making it extremely convenient if you're coming from north Jersey or the Pine Barrens. There's ample parking at the marina, and you'll find basic amenities including restrooms and a small store. If you need supplies or a meal before or after paddling, Waretown has several options within walking distance. Launching is straightforward from the marina's ramp, and there's no launch fee. This isn't a destination paddling location, but it's exactly what you need for a solid local session.
