This 465-acre kettle lake sits in a residential area but maintains surprisingly clear water and a welcoming atmosphere for paddlers of all skill levels. The lake's moderate size means you can explore the entire perimeter in a few hours without feeling rushed, while its sheltered nature provides consistent conditions that won't intimidate newer paddlers. Local paddlers appreciate Union Lake for its dependability when other nearby waters are too choppy or crowded.

Paddling conditions on Union Lake are about as forgiving as you'll find in southeastern Michigan. The lake's bowl-shaped basin and surrounding trees provide excellent wind protection, especially along the western and northern shores. Even on breezy days, you'll typically find calm pockets near the shoreline vegetation. Getting to Union Lake is straightforward, with the main public boat launch located on the lake's southeast corner off Union Lake Road. Parking is adequate but can fill up on prime summer weekends, so consider arriving early or visiting on weekdays when possible. The launch area has basic amenities but no restrooms or concessions, so plan accordingly. From the ramp, you can easily access either the main lake basin or head into the quieter northern section depending on your preference for the day's paddle.
