Wellfleet Town Pier

Wellfleet Town Pier is an excellent launching point for exploring Wellfleet Harbor, a shallow, sheltered bay on Cape Cod's eastern side. This protected waterway spans roughly 2,000 acres and is bordered by salt marshes, tidal flats, and residential shoreline. The harbor connects to Cape Cod Bay through a narrow inlet, making it ideal for paddlers who want a scenic, manageable environment without heavy ocean swell. The town pier itself offers easy water access with nearby parking and is the primary entry point for most recreational paddlers visiting the area. Whether you're launching a sea kayak for a longer exploration or grabbing a quick SUP session, this location delivers reliable conditions and plenty of protected water to explore.

On the water, expect calm, predictable conditions most of the time, though tidal currents can be noticeable near the harbor inlet and deeper channels. The water depth varies considerably depending on tide stage, ranging from several feet in deeper sections to nearly zero on the extensive mud flats. Low tide exposes large areas of muddy bottom, which can be problematic if you're not paying attention to tide tables. Wind-generated chop is typically minimal because the harbor's geography blocks larger swells, making this an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate paddlers. Spring and summer bring warmer water and air temperatures, but even fall and early spring remain very paddleable. Visibility into the water is moderate, and you'll often spot crabs, small fish, and occasional seals.

The best paddling window runs from March through November, though March and November require thicker wetsuits given water temperatures. Plan your visits around tide tables, especially if you're exploring shallow areas or planning longer distance paddles. Wellfleet Town Pier has a modest parking area adjacent to the launch point, and the town center sits just a half mile away with restaurants, coffee shops, and a market. Amenities are limited directly at the pier, so bring water and snacks if you're planning a full day. The harbor can get busy with recreational boats and fishing activity during summer weekends, so early morning or weekday visits tend to be more peaceful. There are no rental facilities at the pier itself, so bring your own kayak or SUP.
