Barlows Landing Beach

Barlows Landing Beach offers straightforward access to Buzzards Bay, a sheltered embayment on Massachusetts' south coast that's ideal for paddlers developing their skills. The launch sits in Pocasset, a quiet corner of Bourne, and puts you directly onto protected waters backed by modest residential development. Buzzards Bay itself stretches roughly 20 miles north to south, bounded by Cape Cod to the east and the Elizabeth Islands to the south. The water here is substantially calmer than the Atlantic-facing beaches nearby, making it a practical choice when coastal conditions turn rough. You'll find sandy bottom in most areas and reasonable visibility on clear days, typical of this glacial embayment.

Expect moderate tidal influence that can run 4 to 5 feet between low and high water, so plan your paddle around tide timing if you're working from the shallower edges. The water tends toward murky olive-green most of the year, which is normal for bay systems with limited exchange. Wind is your primary concern on the water rather than swell or current. Days with 10 to 15 knot winds remain manageable for beginners, but conditions can deteriorate quickly when sustained winds push 20 knots or higher. Morning paddling tends to be calmer before sea breezes fill in. Kayakers and SUP riders typically stay within a mile of shore here, exploring the shallow coves and following the rocky points that punctuate the shoreline. There's enough water to paddle year-round in terms of depth, though you'll want a wetsuit or drysuit for anything outside summer months.

The launch ramp at Barlows Landing works well for kayaks and SUPs, with ample parking and a straightforward concrete ramp. Best paddling runs March through November when water temperatures and air conditions cooperate. Winter paddling is possible but demands proper cold-water gear. Pocasset village is less than a mile away if you need supplies or a coffee beforehand. There are no rentals directly at the launch, so bring your own boat. High tide provides the easiest ramp access, while low tide exposes more sand and can require a carry of 50 feet or so. Restrooms are available at the beach parking area.
