About This Location

Quiet 50-acre lake with a boat ramp near McHenry, IL. Calm, sheltered water ideal for beginners, kayak fishing, and SUP. Electric motors only.

Defiance Lake is a 50-acre lake tucked into the McHenry County Conservation District in northern Illinois, about 2 miles from downtown McHenry. The lake sits inside a preserved natural area with wooded shorelines and no gas-powered boat traffic, making it one of the calmer paddling spots in the Chicago exurbs.

The concrete boat ramp on the south end has a small parking lot that fills on summer weekends. Get there before 9 AM on Saturdays or you will be waiting. The ramp drops into a sheltered cove, so launching is easy even on windy days when the main lake gets choppy.

The entire shoreline is paddleable in about an hour at a relaxed pace. Kayak anglers do well here with largemouth bass and bluegill along the fallen timber on the east bank. SUP is comfortable on calm mornings before the afternoon breeze picks up.

Best from April through October. Winter access is limited and the lake can ice over by December. No entrance fee.
