Holt Landing State Park

Holt Landing State Park sits on the western shore of Indian River Bay, a shallow, protected estuary that spans roughly 35 square miles across southern Delaware. This launch point gives you direct access to one of the state's most beginner-friendly paddling destinations. The bay itself is characterized by extensive saltmarsh, narrow tidal creeks, and open water flats, making it ideal for kayakers and SUP paddlers looking to explore Delaware's coastal ecosystems without dealing with ocean swells. The landing provides excellent staging for both short paddles around the immediate area and longer expeditions into the bay's quieter tributaries.

Conditions on Indian River Bay are consistently sheltered, which is exactly what makes this location so approachable for newer paddlers. Water movement is primarily tidal rather than wind-driven, so you'll want to check tide tables before heading out. Incoming tides push water into the narrow creeks and can actually provide current assistance if you're planning a creek exploration. The shallow depths (typically 4 to 8 feet across most of the bay) mean you'll rarely encounter the kind of chop that makes paddling uncomfortable, though afternoon winds can kick up some texture on the open water. Visibility into the water column is generally moderate, typical of bay systems with sandy and silty bottoms. You'll share the water with recreational and commercial fishermen, particularly during warmer months, but traffic remains manageable compared to more developed coastal areas.

Visit between March and November for the best experience, when water temperatures and weather patterns favor comfortable paddling. Summer brings warmth but also afternoon thunderstorms and stronger wind, so aim for early morning paddles during peak season. Holt Landing itself offers parking, a maintained boat ramp, and basic facilities. The park entrance sits just 2.5 miles south of Millville, making it easily accessible from Route 1. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a reliable tide table or app. There's no food service at the landing, so pack snacks if you're planning a full day on the water. Plan to launch at or near high tide for easier water access, especially if you're new to paddling and want to maximize usable paddling area.
