McNally Park

Located just outside Theodore, this public park provides easy entry to the bay's calm, protected areas where seagrass beds and shallow flats dominate the landscape. The bay here is characterized by its brackish waters and abundant wildlife, including dolphins, herons, and various fish species that make for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities during a paddle. The relatively shallow depth and minimal current in the immediate vicinity of McNally Park create a forgiving environment for kayakers and SUP paddlers of all skill levels.

Conditions at McNally Park are predominantly beginner-friendly, with sheltered water that rarely gets choppy despite being part of Mobile Bay proper. The tidal influence here is noticeable but manageable; plan your paddle with the tidal cycle in mind, as outgoing tides can create light current in the bay's shallow channels. Water conditions tend to be calmest during slack tide and early morning hours, which is when you'll also encounter fewer powerboats. Visibility ranges from murky to moderate depending on recent rainfall and tidal flushing, so don't expect crystal-clear water. The seagrass beds can be thick in some areas, occasionally impeding paddling, but they're also the reason the bay supports such rich marine life. The best paddling window runs from March through November, with September and October offering some of the most pleasant conditions before cooler temperatures arrive. Winter paddling is possible but less comfortable, and summer heat and occasional afternoon thunderstorms can be intense. McNally Park has adequate parking and basic facilities, though amenities are modest compared to larger recreation areas. The nearest services, including restaurants and gear shops, are in Theodore just 6.9 miles away. Launch directly from the park's waterfront area, which is relatively straightforward for both kayaks and SUPs. Arrive early during weekends, as parking fills up, especially during spring months. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there's limited shade once you're on the water.
