Upper New River

Above the gorge from Hinton to Thurmond. Gentler Class I-III rapids with beautiful scenery and less commercial traffic. Sandstone Falls (the largest waterfall on the New River) requires a portage. Great for intermediate paddlers.

Lower New River Gorge

Advanced to Expert

The main gorge from Cunard to Fayette Station. Class III-V rapids including famous drops like Upper and Lower Keeney, Greyhound Bus Stopper, and Fayette Station Rapid. Serious whitewater requiring experience or a guide.

Gauley River
